Los ácidos grasos saturados, también llamados "grasas malas", están contenidos en los productos lácteos y en los alimentos de origen animal como la carne de res o las aves de corral.

Mientras, los ácidos grasos monoinsaturados, o con Omega 3, los cuales aumentan los niveles del colesterol bueno (Colesterol HDL) en el organismo, pueden hallarse en alimentos como el aceite de oliva o de avellana, las almendras y el aguacate (palta).

Los ácidos grasos Omega 3 son ácidos grasos poliinsaturados, también conocidos como "ácidos grasos esenciales", lo cual significa que el organismo los necesita pero no puede producirlos por sí mismo. Por esta razón, deben ser incluidos en la alimentación.

El ácido alfa-linolénico (ALA) es el principal de los ácidos grasos Omega 3.

El Omega 3 es de gran importancia para la prevención de enfermedades cardiovasculares como el infarto de miocardio, el accidente cerebro vascular, la arteriopatía obliterante de los miembros inferiores, la impotencia...

También permite disminuir el colesterol malo (Colesterol LDL) y aumentar los niveles del colesterol bueno (Colesterol HDL) en el organismo lo cual permite evitar la formación de placas de ateroma.


Igualmente podría ayudar a prevenir la demencia senil, sobre todo la Enfermedad de Alzheimer y a una mejor hidratación de la piel.

El Omega 3 cumple un rol muy importante durante el embarazo, la lactancia y durante los primeros meses de vida del bebé, pues permite un mejor desarrollo fetal y podría ser de gran importancia en el crecimiento y desarrollo del recién nacido.

Una gran concentración de Omega 3 en el cerebro podría tener efectos favorables en el estado de ánimo, el estrés y el deseo sexual.

Los Omega 3 de origen vegetal se encuentran en aceites de productos vegetales como los aceites de pepa de uva, de soja (soya), o los de maíz y de girasol que contienen entre 50 y 70 gramos de Omega 3 por cada 100 gramos.

Los aceites de colza y de sésamo (ajonjolí) contienen entre 30 y 50 gramos de Omega 3 por cada 100 gramos.

Los pescados, sobre todo los pescados grasos como la caballa, el arenque, el salmón, la anchoa y las sardinas, contienen gran cantidad de ácidos grasos Omega 3.

Sorprenden los errores en este artículo sobre el contenido en omega en 3 de aceites como el de maiz, girasol, o colza. Se habla de cantidades de 30, 50 ó 70 g de omega 3 por cada 100 gramos de aceite, lo cual es una barbaridad. El de colza por ejemplo no llega al 9% de linolénico. Un saludo.
